The five formats and when to use each

How-to titles work best when your video answers a clear procedural question. They rank well in search because they mirror the exact query type viewers type. They perform especially well as evergreen content, accumulating views long after upload.

Number titles set expectations upfront — viewers know the video is structured and scannable, which increases completion rates for those who start watching. Odd numbers like 7 and 9 tend to outperform round numbers.

Curiosity-gap titles withhold one piece of information the title implies the video will reveal. They perform best when the gap is genuine — there really is a secret, a reason, or a correction — not when the title overpromises.

Question titles mirror how viewers search and how they talk to each other. "Is X worth it?" is a search query as much as it is a title. They pull in comparison and consideration traffic — viewers who are deciding whether to pursue a topic.

Controversy titles drive high initial CTR but require the video to deliver on the implication. Used sparingly, they are among the highest-performing formats. Used too often, they train an audience to distrust your thumbnails.
